IRS Error Code - F990-184

In your Form 990-EZ Schedule A, Part III, Line 1, column (e) should have a value other than zero if:

  • Form 990-EZ Part I, Line 1, has a value and
  • Schedule A (Form 990-EZ), Part I, Line 10 is checked

What does it mean:

If your organization is receiving more than 33.5% of its revenue as Contributions, Gifts, Grants, and Similar Amounts from its exempt activities and less than 33.5% of its revenue from Investment Income, unrelated business income, etc., then the organization will have a revenue amount for the current year generated from its exempt activities.

Resolution:
Report the appropriate value on Schedule A, Part III, Line 1, column (e) and retransmit your return

Here's how to report Gifts, grants, contributions, and membership fees received

  • From the dashboard, select the organization and the tax year.
  • You need to click on the 'Rejected by the IRS' button to find the list of errors for the rejected return. Then, click the 'Fix Me' button to resolve the rejection error.
  • Based on the filing type you have chosen, you will be navigated to the corresponding page.
    • Interview-based filing - You'll be directed to Contributions, Gifts, Grants, and similar amounts received by your organization page. Select 'Yes' for the question, "Did you receive any contribution from fundraising events?" and report the contributions for the tax year.
    • Form-based filing - You'll be directed to Part III, Section A, Line 1 of Schedule A. In this line, enter the contributions received in column (e) for the current tax year.
  • Review the details, and click the Transmit button to re-transmit your return to the IRS at no additional cost.

Note: We'll update you on the status of the return once we hear back from the IRS.
