If Form 990, Part VII, Line 1a checkbox (immediately above the table) is not checked, then at least one complete entry must be present in Form 990, Part VII, Section A, Line 1a.

What does it mean:

If you haven't filled in the compensation details of at least one employee in the 990 return, the IRS can reject the return.

Resolution:

Please go ahead and fill in the compensation details of at least one employee to file the 990 Return of your organization.

Here's how to report Compensation paid to employees

  1. From the home page, select the organization and the tax year.
  2. You need to click on the 'Rejected by the IRS' button to find the list of errors on the rejected return. Then, click the 'Fix Me' button to resolve the rejection error.
  3. Based on the filing type you have chosen, you will be navigated to the corresponding page.
    • Interview-based filing - You'll be directed to the Compensation of Officers, Directors, Trustees, Key Employees, Highest Compensated Employees page under the List of Employees section. Here you must report the compensation details of at least one employee who worked in the organization.
    • Form-based filing - You'll be directed to Part VII (Section A), Line 1a of Form 990. Here, you are required to provide the compensation information of at least one employee who worked in the organization
  4. Review the details, and click the Transmit button to re-transmit your return to the IRS at no additional cost.

We'll update you on the status of the return once we hear back from the IRS.
