Applicable To
990-PF 990-N 990-EZ 990 8868 1120-POL

IRS  Error code:

Form 990-EZ: [F990-912-01]
Form 990:  [F990-913-01]

Rejection Message:

The organization type specified in the return didn't match the data in the IRS e-file database.

What does it mean:

In order to function as a tax-exempt organization, you must submit an application (Form 1023 or 1024) to the IRS. Upon acceptance, the IRS will send you a determination letter classifying your organization under a specific IRC section as tax-exempt. The sections could be any 501(c)(3), 4947(a)(1), 527, etc. To reconfirm your organization's tax-exempt status each year, the IRS requires you to enter this IRC section in your annual 990 return. Otherwise, the return would be rejected.

Resolution:

You need to refer your organization's determination letter, correct the section under which your organization is tax-exempt and re-transmit your return (at no extra cost).

Follow the steps to correct the type of organization:

  • From the dashboard, select the organization and the tax year.
  • You need to click on the 'Rejected by the IRS' button to find the list of errors on the rejected return. Then, click the 'Fix Me' button to resolve the rejection error.
  • Based on the filing type you have chosen, you will be able to navigate to the corresponding page.
    • Interview-based filing - You'll be directed to the Type of Organization page. Choose the correct organization type under which your organization has been established with the IRS.
    • Form-based filing - You'll be directed to Section J (Form 990-EZ) or  Section I (Form 990). Here, choose the correct organization type under which your organization has been established with the IRS.
  • Review the details, and click the 'Transmit' button to re-transmit your return to the IRS at no additional cost.

Note: We'll update you on the status of the return once we hear back from the IRS.
